As the story goes, when the train and the insane Captain Davis, along with the lovely double agent, D.J., disappeared into the redwoods and mountains, a brisk shoot-out happened on top of Bear Ridge with a column of Federals led by Captain Doug Erikson of the 69th NY and some Grey Backs. It is said that Major Rhodes fell off the train and was carried off by some renegade Indian women; the double agent was accidentally shot by one of the Federals; Doug Erikson went over to the Confederate side and finally; the passengers on the train over powered Capt. Davis, dragged him off the train and had the Grey Backs shoot him on the spot! Major Rhodes was never seen again! At least that is how the
story was told to me! |
