A Yankee
Goes Berserk!

This is a story captured on film of a deranged Captain with the Federal Army of the Potomac......

"As told to me by one of the boys in the 69th New York volunteers who survived the shoot out on Bear Mountain, Roaring Camp, California"

Brigadier General JH Lane

Federal guards from the 69th New York prepare to ambush and capture MajorRhodes, the South's most brilliant engineer.

Pictured above is one of
Major  Chuck Rhodes' guards, whose attention was
distracted by a
lovely lady who was part of a plot to kidnap the Major and have him shot.

The Major is thrilled to see such a fine lady greeting him. He does not know his two escort guards have been bushwhacked and that his life is in peril!

Davis grabs Major Rhodes who seems
too stunned to resist!

   The crazed Captain orders Confederate
ladies off the train
, so they can take their places.

The Federals discover Mary Aye and her Southern Senator husband, Mike. They are about to shoot them but the crazed Captain Davis stops them just in time!
Captain Davis hits Senator Aye with his revolver as the Senator hits back with his cane!

Suddenly, some Confederates show up!

Johnny Rebs become confused!
It appears that "DJ" turns out to be a double agent and tells Captain Davis to stop the train and surrender.

Meanwhile we see the escort guards are still        knocked out.

The stand-off continues as the Grey Backs
wonder what to do!

As the story goes, when the train and the insane Captain Davis, along with the lovely double agent, D.J., disappeared into the redwoods and mountains, a brisk shoot-out happened on top of Bear Ridge with a column of Federals led by Captain  Doug Erikson of the 69th NY and some Grey Backs. It is said that Major Rhodes fell off the train and was carried off by some renegade Indian women; the double agent was accidentally shot by one of the Federals; Doug Erikson went over to the Confederate side and finally; the passengers on the train over powered Capt. Davis, dragged him off the train and had the Grey Backs shoot him on the spot!  Major Rhodes was never seen again!

At least that is how the story was told to me!
