APPLICATION TO PARTCIPATE IN THE CADET CORPS

As per the Bylaws of the American Civil War Association of 7/27/2005:
Section 10.3, “A minor under 14 may serve in number 3, 4, 5 or 6 position of an artillery piece provided that he has permission of a parent or guardian and the permission of the Chief of Artillery.”
Section 10.4 “No minor under the age of 12 shall be allowed on the battlefield while the battle is in progress.

The Cadet Corps is a voluntary activity for current members of the ACWA Confederate Brigade under the age of 14. It is designed to give youth safety training, historical education, and preparation to become an active part of the Confederate Brigade on the battlefield. Each Cadet must have a parent or guardian present at the event. Each Cadet must have the signed approval of their parent or guardian to participate in the Cadet Corps.

Each Cadet must have successfully passed the safety test and possess a safety card. Successful completion of the expanded 1st Virginia safety test is also required and noted on your safety card.

The leadership and training program of the Corps will be provided by the 1st Virginia Regiment. The 1st Virginia infantry First Sergeant will be responsible for the Cadet Corps training program. An Eagle Scout from the 1st Virginia, with the rank of Corporal will command the Corps.

The objective of the Corps will be to train its members in:

1. Battlefield safety
2. Drill in the manual of arms with wooden practice rifles.
3. First aid and a history of the medical corps.
4. Map reading and making.
5. Camp skills (setting up tents, fire safety, cooking, sanitation)
6. Outdoor survival skills
7. Military history and Etiquette.
8. Musicians (the objective is to assemble a group who can play drums and fife)
9. Assigned to adult provost to assist in public control.

The Cadet Corps will be required to wear the Confederate uniform required by their home company. The default uniform will be that of the 1st Virginia. A minimum uniform consisting of a kepi, pants and shirt is required. Each Cadet must have a period correct canteen and training rifle. Their name should be on each of their personal items.

The Cadet Corps is not a “baby sitting” service. Only those children who maintain discipline and cooperation and obey the orders of the Corps Commander will be allowed to participate.

The first scheduled formation of the Cadet Corps will be at the first Battalion formation. They will fall in as part of the Battalion. When the Battalion departs for the battlefield, the Cadet Corps will split off as the Battalion reaches the battlefield. They will then be under the command of the Cadet Corporal. The schedule for the Corps will be posted at the 1st Virginia headquarters.

The Cadet Corps will form on the 1st Virginia’s company street at each scheduled company training.
